Outlaws: your pathway out of law

Career change coaching for lawyers

Outlaws Coaching was created for lawyers who feel trapped in the legal profession and need help to carve a path out.

I've been there myself — I know how frustrating it feels to realise that law isn't for you, yet also believe you're not qualified for anything else.

"I only know the law" is something I hear from unhappy lawyers all the time. It's completely understandable — but it also couldn't be further from the truth.

From consulting and strategy to operations, tech, and entrepreneurship — lawyers thrive in dozens of industries. I created Outlaws to help those who feel trapped in law unlock their potential and find work that truly excites them.

About Fred & his approach

Fred Spratt, career change coach for lawyers

My background

My name is Fred Spratt and I work both as a career coach for lawyers and a strategy consultant.

I qualified as a solicitor in the City of London in 2011 before moving into consulting, followed by a decade in the drinks trade at Bacardi.

I'm a qualified coach, holding an ICF-accredited Diploma in Integrative Coaching.

I live in Barcelona with my wife.

Helping lawyers rediscover their confidence and find careers they're genuinely excited about is the most rewarding work I've ever done.

My journey out of law

I began my training contract at a leading City law firm in London in 2009. I had studied law at university and everything had been building towards this. However, within a year, I had realised a career in law was not for me. The work did not excite me and the hours were unsustainable. I couldn't spend my life like that.

I was excited by the idea of joining a business and helping to grow it. I wanted to be making commercial decisions, not legal ones. But how on earth was I going to do that? All I knew was the law — what use was that to "normal" businesses? I knew I couldn't continue as a lawyer but I felt entirely unqualified to do anything else. I felt completely trapped.

Thankfully, I had some great people around me and, by working with them, I was able to reframe my skills and experience, build my confidence and plug gaps in my CV. Within a year, I moved into strategy consulting and then went on to spend 10 years working globally in the spirits industry with Bacardi, finally doing work I loved and living the lifestyle I wanted.

Making the leap from law was the best decision I ever made, but it was also tough and lonely. I now want to help others who find themselves in the position I was to find their own path out of law — and into work they love.

My approach

Over a series of focused sessions, we work through three phases: understanding your strengths and values, exploring new career directions, and building a concrete plan to make your move.

As both a coach and an ex-lawyer, I help you transform how you view yourself and your potential beyond the legal profession. Sessions are conducted via video call, commonly over four to six months and at a pace that works for you.

Partnering together, we'll prepare you for the exciting opportunities ahead, equipping you with the tools and tailored strategies to make your next move with clarity and confidence.

Having been there myself, I know the value of unwavering support when taking on a big change like this and I will be there for you every step of the way as you build your new future.

Frequently asked questions

Coaching is a partnership designed to sharpen your thinking on a particular issue, so you can design the best solution for the results you want. You bring the topic you're stuck on and we then work together to get clear on what you actually want, before building a tailored solution that gets you there.

Coaching is not consulting, mentoring or therapy. I won't hand you an off-the-peg plan, tell you which job to take or dig through your distant past. What I will do is help you to see your full potential, deepen your thinking, explore your options and identify your next move with clarity while also holding you accountable through the process.

Coaching can help you to work through any area where you are feeling stuck. Some common topics I work on with clients include:

  • You know law isn't for you, but you have no idea what else you could do or would like to do instead
  • You worry your skills and experience are only relevant to law and you lack what is needed for other careers
  • You know what career move you'd like to make but you have no idea how to make that dream a reality
  • You are clear on your new pathway but need some partnership and accountability as you work through the steps to get you into your new role

The common thread is feeling stuck. Whatever's brought you here, we start with where you are now and work out what to do about it.

No. A number of clients I work with aren't sure and want to work through this with someone who has been there. My job is to help them find clarity and identify their options. It's a big question and it is difficult to tackle on your own. Some end up leaving. Others find a way to stay that suits them better. Either way, we work out what's right for you.

Absolutely not. There is no right or wrong level at which to make a change. I have worked with clients from newly qualified through to Partner level and each level brings its own opportunities and considerations. It's my job to help you leverage your strengths and work through any gaps or challenges. Ultimately, what matters most is your happiness and if you feel you want to change career, there is no wrong time to do this, irrespective of your level.

Far more than many realise. Some stay close to law and move into adjacent spaces like compliance, risk, legal tech and legal operations. Many move into other professional services like finance or consulting (as I did). Others go further afield: I've worked with clients on moves into wellness, writing, environmental services and fintech, among others.

There is no limit to what you can move into. It just needs to be planned for, and that is where I help.

Commonly I work with clients for between four and six months, though this can be shorter or longer depending on your circumstances and how much work there is to do. Sessions are an hour long and usually happen every three weeks, which gives you time to act on what we've discussed between them. You also have my support by email and WhatsApp in between whenever you need it.

All sessions are by video call, so we can work together wherever you are.

Every programme is built around what you need, so there's no fixed price. We'll agree the shape and the cost on our discovery call, before you commit to anything.
